Housing for Families of Patients at your Hospital

The Care House is made available to benefit families whose loved ones are being cared for in the critical care nursing units at West Jefferson Medical Center (West Jefferson). It gives them a comfortable place to stay for free near the hospital while they wait for their loved ones to recover.

The Care House opened in July 2010 and was named “The Care House - The Silva Lining," in loving memory of Mr. Carlos "Chas" Silva and Mr. and Mrs. Christian "Whitey" Schulingkamp by Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Silva. To date, more than 5,000 nights of complimentary lodging in the Care House have been provided to patients' loved ones.

The facility

The 3-bedroom Care House is located just a block from the hospital. Priority is given to individuals whose loved ones have experienced an unexpected medical emergency and live at least 10 miles from the hospital. The House is fully furnished and equipped with many of the comforts of home.

Staying at the Care House

Eligible families must meet the following criteria:

• Loved one requires treatment for an undetermined amount of time
• The medical condition warrants immediate family/significant other(s) support
• Family/significant other(s) must live more than 10 miles from the hospital
• Residents must be 18 or older

Qualified family members/significant other(s) who would like to stay at the Care House must qualify and complete and sign an application and agreement. Rooms are available only for qualifying registered guests on a nightly basis. An extension request must be submitted for any additional night(s). No one is allowed in the Care House or on the premises if they are not an approved and registered guest. The maximium length of stay is 10 consective nights.

Reserve a room

Maximum occupancy is two people per room / one room per patient.

A valid credit card and ID is needed to book a room. The room is free of charge; however, property damage or property loss that occurs as a result of negligence will be charged to the applicant.

Funding for the Care House

The facility is supported by the West Jefferson Hospital Foundation and ongoing donations are accepted to support this short-stay lodging from individuals and/or corporations; they may be given as annual gifts, estate gifts, gifts of stock, and in honor or memory of a loved one. Gifts are considered tax deductible to the extent of the law.
